Compare the ways that extreme emotions are portrayed in Macbeth and Christmas carol

1 At the start of the play Shakespeare uses extreme emotions and actions to build up his protagonist. After the battle Macbeth was being spoken about how he was in battle “As sparrows eagles, or the hare the lion” In the battle Macbeth has been described as a bloodthirsty and never gives up even when faced against overwhelming odds. He uses extreme emotion to describe Macbeth but also foreshadowing what will happen in the future. Also he describes Macbeth like this to show how Macbeth is presented at the start that he does not show fear or emotion to his enemies. During the era Macbeth was set in being a soldier was a high status job which meant that Macbeth was shown so much respect from all sides.

1 On the other hand scrooge has been shown to have extreme emotions very different to Macbeth’s. He is shown to be cold hearted when the charity worker comes in and asks how much he will donate.  ‘If they would rather die,’ said Scrooge, ‘they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.’ Dickens represents scrooge in this way because he wants to show how rich peoples attitude were presented during the Victorian era. This quote suggests that scrooge shows no empathy towards the poor or any other people including his family. Unlike Macbeth, Scrooge is not being of service to anybody else only to himself. Scrooge only cares about his profit. Dickens makes his character seem over exaggerated to show how his starting point is and to how far he can go.

2 Moving on from the start of the play Shakespeare shows extreme emotion with Macbeth in Macbeth soliloquy. He is debating what to do next. “is this a dagger which i see before me. The handle towards my hand? Come ,let me clutch thee.I have thee not , and yet I see thee still”. From this quote, Shakespeare shows Macbeth as conflicted and very confused. Shakespeare presents Macbeth with extreme emotion like this because he wants to show the audience that Macbeth is not what he was in the opening of the play. He also wants to show the audience that Macbeth can be easily manipulated and not the warrior he was presumed to be at the beginning of the play.

IGCSE writing to respond

Dear Ms Samantha Taylor:

I agree with Franzen’s ideas because if you think about the world we live in today, it has been taken over by one all powerful tool: the internet. It has taken over the minds of teens and changed their thinking into texts. On average, about 250 daily texts are being sent through the phones of teens. The world we live in today is turning into a disaster. If we think about the life goals that the vast majority of teens I know have, they have changed out of all recognition from previous generations. Aspiring doctors or teachers have been converted into YouTube account creators whose idea of service to society is getting a few likes on their latest video of a cat dancing.

What I am  trying  to say is that the internet stops teenagers from achieving what they want to be when they grow up. As Franzen said and I quote “All those countless hours hours glued to Facebook or Instagram has turned teenagers into screen enslaved social inadequate.” This is very true and honest. Instead of teenagers wasting their time texting on Facebook and liking photos on Instagram you could be preparing for your exams. I do understand that this is very boring to do but at the end of the day messing around not revising wont get you an A In your exams, revising will. The internet does make teens unable to socialize face to face because constantly their eyes are glued to the electronic devices.

Meaningful relationships can be really difficult due to social media sites. By focusing so much of our time and physic energy on these less meaningful relationships. One of my friend called Bill used to get bullied on social media sites. He told me that one mistake you make on social media can ruin your life. Due to his appearance He said to me it makes him feel like committing suicide because of social media and bullying has to stop from these social media sites.

The dangers of  online predators is also very extreme and can cause significant damage to young people’s lives. For example, if someone has a online relationship with a stranger this can result in to being stalked by this predator or if they are telling each other their deepest secrets which could end up going viral and causing severe emotional damage. An example of this could be if a girl told her online admire a secret that she used to have a relationship with a teacher then that person can cause a lot of damage by telling people on Facebook or snap chat of what this person has done.

While we are busy tweeting, texting and spending, the world is drifting towards disaster. Teenagers don’t really take into consideration or realise that their generation is a major crisis about to reach its peak. Now that we have all these new expensive gadgets and high-tech items, teenagers are being brainwashed to the extent that they are detaching themselves from reality. The story of David Molak is a classic example of a teenager who was cyber bullied to his own death. It is heartbreaking that in the real world social media is having a disastrous effect on the mental health of the nation. Obsession with gadgets is pushing teenagers over the edge, into an epidemic of psychological disorders. They seem to depend on social networking sites for self-satisfaction and higher status among their friends

Just last week I went on to the train to go home, as I stepped on the train I was looking around to find a seat but it was in vain. What got my attention was how everyone on that section of the train had eyes Glued to their mobile phones, with their headphones plugged in. What I don’t like about this is that these people do not pay attention to what’s around them. For example when I was on the bus one day to kings cross I saw a shady looking guy still an old lady’s purse but it was to hectic due to a crush of people blocking my way. However there was 5 people around her that could of helped her but they were all glued to their phone and not paying attention. This acts as a primary example of how the care of society has broken down due to electronic devices.

compare the ways the poet present impact of conflict of at the border and out of the blue

The family in at the border was driven out of their country due to war. At the border was made by choman hardi she was born in 1974. At the border is based on a family that was driven out of their country due to conflict with Iran and Iraq. The family fled to Kurdistan which borders Iran. Kurdistan was neutral and were not involved in the war so that’s why the family in at the border went there. After the war was finished with Iran and Iraq the family of at the border was waiting to get past the border but was covered by a huge fence so they had to wait. The family was so excited to go return home. At the border is a soft poem that is a happy poem that has no bad side to it.

If we compare this poem to out of the blue there is a big difference because out of the blue is based on a terrorist attack and is a sad and scary poem compared to at the border. Out of the blue is about a man that is stuck in the burning twin towers and cannot get out. The man is sitting out on the ledge of the window and is waving out his white shirt to alert people to try and get some help. The man does not know that no one can help him. Out of the blue poem is a poem that is sad to read because he might have a family watching him die because he cant get out of the building. This is based on a true story because what’s happening in this poem actually happened. Over 4000 people died and is really different to at the border they are completely the opposite of each other.

The similarities of the two poem is that they both effects civilians. A lot of imagery is being used for example in at the border it says a man bent down kissing his muddy homeland you can imagine him doing that cause he misses his home.

out of the blue

Repetition is used in the poem to present desperation in out of the blue. In the third stanza where it says “do you think you are watching watching a man shaking crumbs”. This represents desperation because he is repeating the same word. He is speaking to

how had the structure choices made by the poet enhanced are understanding of the theme?

The poem takes place on top of the wood in the high trees. In the poem it says “I sit in the top of the wood” The convenience of the high trees so its based in first person and by the title its a hawk sitting on top of the high trees in the woods.  At the end of the poem it takes place as the hawk is flying away from the sun ready to catch his pray. In this poem each line is 4. Every stanza has 4 lines it says “my manners are tearing off heads”. This line stands out to me because the way the hawk says it as he does not feel sorry for the deaths he has committed he does not regret what he does. He fears nothing at all he acts like he is god and that no one can touch him. The similarities between hawk and mankind is that the hawk thinks nature gives him everything the hawk acts like god is underneath him and that he was created by nature and god is not on his level. The poem sums up a hawk that feels that he is more powerful than anyone and that he was made by nature.

comparing poetry

At the border: It is about civil war. A girl who was from Iraq she migrated to Kurdistan because of the civil war in her country. Now she is returning home back to Iraq because the civil war is over. The man bends down on his knees and kisses his muddy homeland because he has been away for a very long time and cant wait to be home with his culture and language.

Belfast confetti: Belfast confetti is about a civil war happening in Belfast between the Protestant and the IRA . The man says I was trying  to complete a sentence in my head, but it kept stuttering. He cant think straight because he is scared of what’s happening in his town. He is surrounded by riots and bombs. The different of at the border and Belfast confetti is that in at the border the Iraqi family is so happy to go back home they can smell the muddy homeland. In Belfast confetti the man that lives there is scared of his home and is sad of what happening to his home he is anxious to leave because he is worried of dying.

At the border it is presented in first person. In the 5 stanza it says I was 5 years old standing by the checkpoint. This is first person it says I which is first person because your speaking about yourself and your experience. Belfast confetti is set in first person.

The poet had written at the border because he is showing how live is like for a family to finally go back home from Kurdistan. At the border shows real emotion because it tells you how emotional it can be away from your home for many years.  Being away from your home for years due to civil war it can be really devastating because family members could die because of the war friends could never be seen again. So this is telling you how lucky you are to be at home with your culture and family/friends. At the border sums up a family so happy to return home after civil war. Belfast confetti is similar to at the border both in first person. It is similar because both people had their country in civil wars  against each other. Belfast confetti  is a man that is caught in between a civil war by the IRA and the prodestants.

come on come back

come on come back is a poem created by Stevie Smith.

1) I think because she is alone sitting on the stone dying away. It says she is is alone at midnight in the moonlight. This sound very depressing and its a setting where something bad is going to happen.  The darkness is bad evil setting so this is the setting for Vaudevue death.

2) M.L.5 sounds like its is in the future because M.L.5  sounds very robotic and would be in 400 years time. It says in the second stanza M.L.5 has left her alive only her memory is dead. This sounds like a tablet or gas made her memory go. This is something that can be developed in the future 400 years from now it abounds very futuristic.

3) In the second stanza it says “she fears and cries , ah why am I hear sitting alone on a round flat zone on a hummock”  This creates sadness because the girl is scared and crying asking herself why is she here. She is alone with no one to support her. This is sad because no one knows the pain she is going through and its upsetting that no one can help her and be with her she is all alone not knowing what to do because she has just been in a war and dead bodies every where with no help from her side.

The right word

The Right Word Imtiaz Dharker was born in Pakistan and brought up in Scotland

The right word is about Imtiaz Dharker’s poem “The Right Word” focuses on a figure that is in the shadows outside the narrator’s house. It is noticeable that the word outside appears in the first seven of the poem’s nine stanzas, and the word shadows or shadow in the first six. Because the figure is in the shadows, it is difficult to make out who or what he is, and so the narrator is searching for the right word to identify who the person is outside her window.Outside the door, lurking in the shadows, is a terrorist. Is that the wrong description? Outside that door, taking shelter in the shadows, is a freedom-fighter. I haven’t got this right. Outside, waiting in the shadows, is a hostile militant. The poem is about a suspicious and divided community, where different viewpoints lead to violence. The narrator tries to find an accurate way to describe a young activist who at first seems threatening. At the end, the activist seems to be just a harmless child. The poem is written in the first person, making it seem personal with consistent use of the personal pronoun ‘I’. The words lurking and taking shelter are two different words for the same action, but one sounds sinister and the other sounds vulnerable. It is clear from the first stanza that this is a political poem as the term ‘terrorist’ is still controversial.

Should refugees be welcome in Britain?

In my opinion, refugees should be handled with a different approach due to Europe population stressing and risks that it brings to the country.More than a million migrants and refugees crossed into Europe in 2015, sparking a crisis as countries struggle to cope with the influx, and creating division in the EU over how best to deal with resettling people. Already there have been over 117,161 refugees, entering the UK last year and still more coming. The problem with taking refugees into Britain is the fact that the population has been growing rapidly in areas such as London or Edinburgh causing rapid urbanization. I think that refugees that are coming to Europe should be more organized instead of putting so many refugees into one single country.

For example, if you look at the crisis in Germany a whole range of refugees have entered Germany without logically organizing how many should enter at a time. In my opinion, country’s all across Europe should take a equal amount of refugees because its not fair for Germany because they have to take so much refugees from the war zone in Syria. For example, in Cologne on new years eve an american women was  sexually assaulted by a bunch of refugees she was pushed by a bunch of refugees blocking her from exiting they started crabbing her and tried kissing her. She later said“I went into a kind of fighting mode, and kicked and hit and pushed until I got away,” she said. “I was getting really scared.” That was when she was approached by a group of Syrian refugees offering help. This tells me that the amount of refugees that entered Germany has caused a crime which tells me that this is because of unorganized plans to bring in refugees.

A very powerful example of refugees being welcome is my dad.My dad came from Romania when he was 18 years old. He was an asylum seeker. He came after the revolution in Romania. When my dad came to this country he seeked for an asylum  because during the time he weren’t aloud in the country due to Romania wasn’t in the EU at the time. The point im trying to get across is that refugees or asylum seekers are portrayed as bad people and that they are pointless to be in countries such as England or the us. Now my dad has a family and a home with a god job in the center of London. Refugees should be welcome because in Syria where most of the refugees are coming from are being bombed by Russia, US,France and Britain a lot of innocent people are dying everyday but no one takes notice of whats going on. Recently a lot of refugees have been drowning in the waters of Greece and turkey everyday. This is how desperate these refugees are just to be safe from war and to raise their children.

Refugees are portrayed as undermine people but this is not the case. There are many successful refugees such as on the news couple months back there was a refugee with his daughter in Hungary and a ugly Hungarian women tripped him and his daughter up. This was shown all over the news. The next couple of days the man and his daughter were on the news because he became a football manager in Spain. This goes to show that refugees are not all bad and that there are a lot of refugees that is famous and smart. The reason why today that people think that refugees are bad people because groups such as Britain first are racist towards refugees saying that they are terrorists. This upsets me because innocent refugees are being killed everyday without no coverage but the only way people recognize them as cold blooded terrorists. So in my opinion refugees should be welcome in Britain because they are not bad people and they are the number one target of terrorists and their country is being destroyed so that why they are coming to Europe for safety and to raise their family. There are many reasons to disagree and agree why refugees should be welcomed in Britain mine is they should be welcme due to everything I have told you.

The Man with No Face

Surrounding me are hundreds of trees, each one identical and as ominous as the next. I’m alone and lost in this inescapable forest. The wind is howling violently and I’m drenched from the rain. Deafening bangs of thunder and lightning petrify me. As I turned my head I saw an old mansion towering above the trees just visible in the distance. Overwhelmed with hope, I manage to find the energy to sprint towards the enormous house. Branches clawing my body as I was sprinting but I didn’t care all I cared about was getting to that warm house. I pushed open the dull gate, shuffling nervously towards the door.

I quietly opened the door but it made a loud squeaky sound which echoed all around. As I entered this demonic looking house all I saw was the darkness that haunted it. The numbing wind was suffocating the house as I entered. Along side me was a lamp, I picked it up and wandered the house. The floor was smashed to pieces as I entered the next room to my left I smelt a rotten stench as if someone or something died in here. I found a gun loaded on the counter in the corner of the room.

I went up the stairs to find more things the stairs broken and made such a loud creaking sound I almost fell through. As I got to the top floor As I turned my head around I saw a shadow run past me, my body started to freeze up I couldn’t move I was that frightened. I managed to move my body and start running down the hallway shouting is anyone there!!!! .  Behind me the door creaked open , I had my gun aiming towards the door my hands shaking with fright.

As I left the room I heard another banging noise this time it was coming from round the corner I slowly walked up to the noise and saw the most petrifying ever. It was a girl hanged right in front of me, I didn’t know what to do so I decided to walk past and carry on there was no going back now. I then entered the next room  opened the door slightly to see if anyone was in there but fortunately no one was I looked out the window to take a break and all I saw is this tall skinny man in a suit with no face just staring back at me. I could not move away from the window the mans demonic face struck me as lightning.

All of the sudden I heard a scream coming from up stairs I looked back at the window and the creepy man was gone. I left the room and ran round the corner to go up stairs I stopped something was really creeping me out. I started hearing noises in my head saying follow the darkness look around you!!. It started getting even louder and louder I couldn’t take it any more so I fell on the floor covering my ears, then it stopped. I got up and ran upstairs to where the noise was coming from.

As I entered the room the noise was gone. The room was bedroom with a bed a wardrobe, mirror and a wooden stall. I opened the wardrobe to have a look inside as I was still soaking from the thunderous rain. The clothes smelt fresh as if the person wore it yesterday. I took a jumper from the wardrobe headed to the mirror to put it on. As I slowly put the jumper over my head I saw a image of a face in the mirror by the door for a split second then it was gone. I was thinking to myself was it actually real?

As I was walking down the corridor I knew I had to get out of this house so I decided to run down the hallway and down the stairs the door exit door was right insight as I was heading to the exit the door slammed shut right in front of me the door was locked I couldn’t get out.
